Ecological restoration in Alia, Cáceres, Spain

The ecological restoration of a forested area in Alía, Cáceres (Spain) was done between January2023 and May 2023 in one plot. 19 species were planted, consisting of: Populus nigra, Ficus carica, Acer pseudoplatanus, Castanea sativa, Morus nigra, Prunus dulcis, Quercus pyrenaica, Taxus baccata, Acer monspessulanum, Quercus rubra, Prunus mahaleb, Genista scorpius, Genista umbellata, Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandula stoechas, Cupressus sempervirens, Cupressus arizonica, Genista cinerea and Prunus avium. All species are native to the region and are adapted to the local conditions. Previous individuals of Pinus spp. and Eucalyptus globulus were removed to make space for the new selection of species. Four participants (excluding landowner and Life Terra team) were present during the proffesional planting that was carried out. The planting aims to enhance biodiversity, have a positive effect on soils and provide resources to the owner. The landowner also provided irrigation and recovered historical local varieties of grapes for wine production. Furthermore, there are plans to build a sustainable eco-hostel in the plot, providing a space for recreation and environmental education as visitors will be introduced to the plantation and its benefits and also to observe the local species of animals.
